Grace Ethel Lane 1926-2017
Grace Ethel Lane of Chewelah passed away peacefully on June 2, 2017, she was 90 years old. She was born December 31, 1926 in Helena, Montana to Iola St. Germain and Robert Eggenthaler.
Grace was raised by her mother, spending time with her Grandmother, Aunt Alice, and cousin Billy, while her mother cooked for ranch crews growing up, and sometimes when times were tough, ending up in foster care during the great depression. During World War II, Grace worked long hours in a laundry. In 1948, Grace cooked for a sawmill work crew, that was owned by Lyle Lane and Bob Gould. After a year, she moved back to Helena where she lived with her mother and worked. During that time Lyle visited her often, and they were engaged and married on September 3, 1949. The young couple moved to the Lake of the Woods near Bigfork, MT in 1954, where Lyle worked as a logger and Christmas tree farmer. Grace and Lyle have 9 wonderful children together, Vicky, Susan, Larry, Steve, Tom, Alicia, Donna, Bill and Laura. During this time, Grace and Lyle opened their home in Montana to 21 foster children and 2 later in Washington, caring for them and raising them like their own.
On April 8, 1965, they suffered the tragic loss of their son Larry at 9 years old, when he was hit by a car. Through their grief, their faith in the Lord strengthened and grew and they began to attend church regularly. In 1969, the family moved to Chewelah where Lyle and Grace took over operations of his parent’s dairy farm and became members of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Grace always said that the family’s motto was that they worked together and they played together. After 20 years of working the farm, they sold the cattle in 1985 and in 1988 sold all but 14 acres where they retired and made their home on the hill. Sadly though their retirement years were short, in 1991 Lyle passed away. She moved to East Wenatchee in 2005 to be close to her youngest daughter, Laura where they had adjoining back yards and her grandkids could run back and forth to spend time with her.
In 2012 she returned “home” to Chewelah. Grace’s children were her life and she devoted herself to them, saying the best years of her life were when us kids were little. She also enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, sewing quilt tops for missions, and yard sales. She will be forever loved and dearly missed by her family, and all that had the honor of knowing her.
In her strong faith, Grace is with our Lord Jesus and has been reunited with her son Larry, husband Lyle, mother Iola, father Robert, aunt Alice, cousin Billy, and grandparents.
She is survived by her 8 children, Vicky (Myron) Mast, Kalispell, Mt, Susan (Gary) Votapka, Fallbrook, CA, Steve (Linnea) Lane, Chewelah, WA, Tom (Suzy) Lane, Colville, WA, Alicia (Joey) Sulgrove, Valley, WA, Donna (Virgil) White, Kapolei, HI, Bill Lane, Chewelah, Laura (Justin) Rosentrater, E. Wenatchee, WA; 20 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
