In last week’s paper we saw the City Of Chewelah sold downtown Main Street parking property to a private business. Another bad decision by our City leaders.
I have no problem with the purchaser of the property; it was a good business decision for them. But the property was purchased by the City a few years ago for the expansion of downtown parking. The family who sold the property to the City could have sold it to the new owners back then. But it was sold to the City for downtown parking, plain and simple.
I was also disappointed in the Chewelah Chamber of Commerce; I heard no objections from them. But the President of the Chamber is the City Administrative Secretary and the Vice-President is a Minister? I see a little conflict of interest! What has happened to the business leadership in this City!
We have all heard for years from all the different people of this community about the problem with downtown parking. Then the City does this with no objection not even from the Chamber, except one councilperson. Wow!
What this is really all about is bad debts the City has acquired by subsidizing a sub-division for years; the Chewelah Golf and Country Club. This was to benefit a chosen few at the expense of all the citizens of Chewelah and the taxpayers.
