With only three games remaining on their league schedule, the Lady Cougars are hoping for a strong finish to their season.
The biggest boost they could receive would come from the return of their leading scorer, Brittney Wuesthoff, to the lineup. For the past five games, Wuesthoff has been on the bench, awaiting clearance from the doctor to resume play. There is a strong possibility that could happen this week.
Without Wuesthoff, the Lady Cougars lost all three of their league games this past week. They gave Kettle Falls its first league win of the season on Tuesday, 49-39. They lost a 50-41 game at Lakeside on Friday. Then, they were defeated by Lakeside on Saturday by a 41-22 score.
“Hopefully, the doctor will let me play with a brace on my knee to keep it from bending sideways,” said Wuesthoff.
The trio of losses dropped the Lady Cougars into the league cellar with a 2-7 record. They still face games against Freeman, Medical Lake, and Newport in the upcoming two weeks to close out their season.
Ryann Richmond and Sydnie Katzer combined for 26 points against Kettle Falls on Tuesday, but it was not enough to hold back the unleashed Bulldogs. Chewelah had been the winner of the first game between the two teams, 60-46. This time, however, Chewelah could not muster enough fire power.
Richmond scored a team-high 15 points and Katzer added 11 more, but the rest of the team managed only 13 points.
Katelyn Garner was Chewelah’s only double-digit scorer at Riverside on Friday. She finished the game with 10 points as the Cougars lost to the host Rams, 50-41.
The Lady Cougars did not have a score in double-figures against Lakeside on Saturday. Richmond earned high-point honors with eight points.
