Cougars move on to face No. 1 seed Medical Lake…
Chewelah eliminated Newport from the NEA League district tournament on Wednesday evening, holding on in the fourth quarter for a 51-48 postseason victory. Krislyn Koler led the way with 18 points for the Cougars, who improved to 13-8 on the season.
After the first quarter, Chewelah led 16-9 and then had a 30-22 halftime lead.
Newport, led by Alika Robinson’s 13 points, charged back in the third quarter by outscoring the Cougars 17-6 and taking the 39-36 lead. In the fourth quarter, Chewelah’s Jaelynn Skok scored seven of her ten points to help the Cougars shake of the Grizzlies in a game that had a one-point different with under a minute to go.
Newport’s Jocelin Nenema notched 12 points to the Grizzlies total, while Kennedy Robison also scored 10 points for the Cougars.
Chewelah moves on to face No. 1 seed Medical Lake on Friday in the district semifinal at West Valley.
