The Northeast Forty-niners made short work of the Spokane Blue Devils last Tuesday afternoon, sending their fans home early on a cool and rainy day after winning both games of their doubleheader in five innings, 10-0 and 11-0
Caleb Wiebe and Cody Sweat threw matching two-hitters and their teammates walloped 25 total hits as the Niners finished off the visiting Blue Devils after five innings by the 10-run rule.
The twin wins raised the Niners to a 22-5 season record near the midpoint of their AAA American Legion Baseball season.
A three-run homer by Logan Maxwell highlighted a four run first inning for the Niners in the opening game. Nick Naccarato (Chewelah) and Sam Sprague (Colville) both singled. A double by JR Henry (Colville) batted in Naccarato, leaving two base runners onboard for Maxwell’s home run.
Singles by Derek Smith (Chewelah), Ryan Leone (Central Valley), and Naccarato produced two more runs for the 49ers in the second inning to widen their lead to 6-0.
The Forty-niners scored four more runs in their final at-bat in the fourth inning. Dalton Hanson (Deer Park) started the rally with a lead-off double. Leone’s single gave the home team a pair of base runners. Calvin Connall (Chewelah) then doubled to bat in two runs. Sprague’s sacrifice fly batted in another. Maxwell singled to add the fourth run to the scoreboard, achieving a 10-run split.
Wiebe sent Blue Devil batters back to the dugout in order in the top of the sixth inning to end the game. It was the fourth time in five innings on the mound that the right-hander had a one, two, three outing on the mound. He finished the game with a 10-0 shutout win.
The second game of the day stayed close until the bottom of the fourth inning. Naccarato, Leone, Maxwell, Smith, Sprague, and Dillon Bigler (Chewelah) hit singles in the first three innings, but only one run had scored. Smith was brought home on Leone’s single in the second inning.
Forty-niner bats began to produce runs in the fourth inning. Singles by Leone, Naccarato, and Henry batted in three runs to give the 49ers a 4-0 lead.
Seven more Niner runs scored in the fifth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule. Singles by Leone, Henry, Connall, and Hanson did the damage.
Sweat allowed the Blue Devils only four base runners on his way to the 11-0 shutout victory. He gave up two singles, hit a batter, and walked another.
On Wednesday, the 49ers completed their four-game series with the Blue Devils, defeating them at Jackson Field in Spokane, 6-5 and 4-3.
Sprague threw six innings, allowing 11 scattered singles, but only two runs, to win the opening game. Naccarato was the closer, coming to the mound to throw the final inning to earn the save.
Doubles by Sweat and Connall provided the fire power. A single off the bat of Naccarato batted in two runs.
The 49ers scored two runs in the final inning of the second game to notch a come from behind win, 6-5.
Two hits apiece by Henry, Sprague, and Leone bolstered the Niners at the plate.
Naccarato bagged the pitching win. He threw the final two innings behind Parker and Wiebe, and became the pitcher of record when the 49ers took the lead.
