After a regional basketball game in the state was moved because of the coronavirus, and two new cases were confirmed Friday evening in Washington, the Washington Department of Health announced on Saturday that the first coronavirus-related death in the US occurred in Washington.
A man in the Seattle area has died from the coronavirus, health officials announced.
“It is a sad day in our state as we learn that a Washingtonian has died from COVID-19. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. We will continue to work toward a day where no one dies from this virus,” Governor Jay Inslee said in a statement. “In partnership with the Washington State Department of Health, the Washington State Department of Emergency Management and local and community health partners, we are strengthening our preparedness and response efforts. I am committed to keeping Washingtonians healthy, safe and informed.”
The department is hosting a press conference at 1 p.m. to provide further details.
