The Wooley family, Zairn and Michelle and three of their four children, Charlie, Brooklyn, and Logan, spotted the First Buttercup of 2013 on Feb. 26 just north of Chewelah along Highway 395.
Recording the first bloom is a tradition and an early sign for spring in the community.
In the 1990s, starting at age 2, Zairn found the First Buttercup for seven years in a row in the same “secret spot” that this year’s was found. However, this is the first time his children have gotten to share in the honor.
Michelle said they have been searching for the buttercup for about a week, and try every year to find the first bloom.
“We’re very excited,” she said.
