FACT CHECK FRIDAYS: Kamala Harris is eligible to be vice president

A rumor making its rounds on the internet is the Kamala Harris is not eligible to serve as U.S. President because her parents are immigrants. Democratic challenge for president Joe Biden chose Harris as his vice president this week and these claims began circulating.

According to Loyola Law School Professor Jessica Levinson, Harris was born in the U.S., she is regarded as a natural born citizen under the 14th amendment of the Constitution and she is eligible to serve as president or vice president.




“Full stop, end of story, period, exclamation point,” Levinson told the Associated Press.

Harris is 55 years old and was born on Oct. 20, 1964 in Oakland California. Her father was an economist from Jamaica and her mother was a cancer researcher from India. Both met at the University of California – Berkeley as graduate students.
