Eloise Bartleson Miller 1918-2016
Eloise Bartleson Miller passed away Nov. 30, 2016. She was born in Colfax, WA on July 27, 1918. She grew up, with her younger brother Jack, in the Palouse farming community and was always helping her Dad.
After graduating from Pullman High School in 1935, she attended Kinman Business University in downtown Spokane. She stayed in Spokane with her two cousins, Josephine and Vesta, and they had many good times. After graduating from Kinman she used shorthand to type letters for Spokane Casket Company. Eloise was so efficient and good at her job that several other companies sought out her services as a stenographer.
She married Jack C. Miller on January 18, 1937. They worked on her parents’ grain farm at Oakesdale, and started a family. By the time they moved to Burnt Valley, north of Chewelah, they had two girls, Doris and Polly. Over the span of six years they and their growing family moved three more times; living twice at the same house in Burnt Valley before settling at Valley, Washington. Here, they raised their five children and were awarded the Stevens County Cattleman of the Year. Eloise worked side-by-side with Jack; driving tractors and trucks and chasing cows. She was a housewife, rancher, farmer, mentor and mother. Many times she was up in the middle of the night doing paperwork, sewing clothes for her children, or canning vegetables from her garden. Eloise was president of the PTA, and Jack was active on the school board. Both passionate about music, they raised a musical family; all their children learned to play an instrument. For several years, they continued to farm and ranch in Chewelah, where they participated in growing grain test plots for Washington State University. They retired to Spokane in 1974. Always willing to sit down and share funny stories, Eloise talked about her Model A Ford that once wound up in the ditch, and the goat that ate its cloth top. She also had a story about the truck she drove with two transmissions.
Eloise is preceded in death by her parents, Ray O. Bartleson and Eloise “Midge” Judson Bartleson; her brother Jack “Buck” H. Bartleson; her husband Jack C. Miller; a grandson Kaspar W. Miller; a great-granddaughter Shannon C. Gaffney; and great-grandson Samuel I. Dewey.
She is survived by her five children: Doris J. Fuller (Jim); Paula C. Dewey (Jim); Jackie R. Fuller; Dave J. Miller (Pat); and Eloise A. Janish; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
