When Jon Symonds was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident on Christmas day, it didn’t’ take long at all for Chewelah School District staff members to ask, “What can we do to help.” Gess Principal Jerry Pugh said the offers for assistance from staff members were almost immediate.
With that in mind, the staff is hosting a fundraiser for Jon on Saturday, April 13th at Gess Elementary. The silent auction will open at 4:00, followed by a live auction at 6:00. Sandy’s Stromboli with chips and bottled water will be available for only $5.00 starting at 4:00 and continuing until the sandwiches run out.
“It’s comforting to know that the people in our community always come together for each other during tough times,” said Mr. Pugh. “Jon is a respected colleague and friend to many people in the Chewelah area, and despite his paralysis, he’ll still be a very active member of our community and our schools. With specialized and adaptive equipment, he’ll find his new normal and get right back into gear. The proceeds from this auction will help with that process. Any money raised will be put to good use.”
Kathy Wellman, the Chewelah School District Nurse, explained that a list of auction items will be published in The Independent. “We anticipate that the community will really turn out for the event,” she said.
