Last Wednesday I attended the city council meeting along with a few other Chamber of Commerce members to present the city an option of accepting a donation on behalf of the community for $20,000 to keep the city pool open only if the city council could not find the resources to fund it themselves. This was a one year fix, with the intention to help the community this year while the city works on the budget for next year.
Our only conditions were that the pool be open a minimum of 8 weeks and that the money only went to the pool. I am disappointed to say that at this time the city of Chewelah did not accept that donation and in fact told us that the city was still short another $4,000 to install a ADA approved lift for people with disabilities. They did mention that the city has been aware of this requirement since 2010. The city has not only failed the disabled but the entire community by not funding or planning for the lift.
Needless to say, I am DISAPPOINTED at the leaders of Chewelah. Their willingness to compromise, explore, and work together has not shown through. Mike Frizzell has been given the task of researching the lift and the city will meet again on May 14 at 6:30 p.m. to continue the little discussion they gave towards saving our pool. I encourage anyone who is concerned about our pool, our city, and our tax dollars to contact a city council member, the mayor or administrator!
Twenty thousand dollars is about to be returned to the gracious people who wrote the checks, not because we were not willing to help but because the City of Chewelah has dropped the ball!
