Curtis Wendell Ott 1942-2016
Curtis Wendell Ott, age 74, a resident of Addy, WA for over 70 years, passed away on Nov. 10, 2016 at his Addy home. Curtis was born on March 10, 1942 in Ritzville, WA the son of Arthur Paul and Dorothy Mildred (Franson) Ott.
Curtis was raised on the family farm in Addy and attended grade school at the Addy Schoolhouse. He then finished high school in Chewelah and graduated with the class of 1960. Curtis moved to Spokane to further his education at the Kinman Business University and Whitworth College. During this time, he enlisted in the U.S. Air National Guard and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. Following his education, Curtis returned to farm in Addy. In 1967, he married Barbara Nixon and they began a family with the birth of their daughter, Roberta and son, Richard. Together they operated the dairy until Barabara passed away in 1975. Curtis continued operation of the dairy and later met, Pam McIntyre. They exchanged wedding vows in 1976 and their family grew with the births of their sons, Kevin and Kelly. Curtis also worked for Alcoa from 1989 until its closure in 2001. Working at Alcoa was an opportunity for Curtis to work close to home while continuing to farm. Curtis enjoyed his return to full time farming and the chance to work the ranch to its full potential. He was meticulous with the accounting and kept measure from the yearly startup investment to the harvested yield. At the age of 74, he was still keeping the books and running the farm his way, which gave him much pride.
For the past several years, Curtis has farmed alongside his son, Richard, and enjoyed watching the next generation of family till the soil.
Curtis was actively involved as a past Chief and member of the Addy Volunteer Fire Department for nearly 50 years. In his later years, Curtis spent more time with his growing passion for photography whether on a trip, at the farm, or providing fire documentation. He also shared in the membership of two local ATV clubs and enjoyed their outdoor trail rides and adventures. He was a quiet man who gave answers only after he had time to contemplate all outcomes. Curtis had a “fixer’s” heart and a desire to work towards compromise, resolve conflict, help to fix the stranded and heal the broken. He offered patience, a thoughtful reserve and his friendship to countless people throughout the years.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Dorothy and his first wife, Barbara.
He is survived by his wife, Pam Ott, at the home, four children; Roberta “Bobbie” Martin and her husband, Bruce of Dixon, MO, Richard Ott and his wife, Karla of Spokane, WA, Kevin Ott and his wife, Nadine of Litchfield Park, AZ, Kelly Ott and his fiancée, Karen Smith of Addy, WA; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; siblings, Christine Ott-Hopkins of Bend, OR, Merrill Ott and his wife, Anne of Addy, WA, Claudia Machtmes and her husband, Ed of Addy, WA and Sally Eckhart and her husband, Dusty of Deer Park, WA.
