Krislyn Koler went 6-for-8 with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in at Freeman on Friday, igniting Chewelah to a doubleheader sweep, 7-4 and 6-3, over the Scotties.
With the wins, Chewelah remains solid in third place in the current Northeast A League softball standings. The Lady Cougars added three wins to their record last week with a shutout win at Newport on Tuesday, followed by a doubleheader sweep at Freeman. The three wins raised their current record to eight wins and two losses.
With Colville and Lakeside sharing the league lead with 7-1 conference records, Chewelah can only hope that both teams lose one or more times over their final six games. The Cougars still have to play the Indians twice on May 5 and May 10. The two losses at Lakeside may haunt them throughout the remainder of the league season.
Larissa Sweat’s two-run triple into deep center-field highlighted Saturday’s 18-0 shutout win at Newport, as the Lady Cougars used a pair of six-run innings to grind down the Grizzlies.
The league victory was a team effort as every Cougar in the starting lineup had at least one hit. By the end of the five-inning game, Chewelah had hammered 14 hits and added nine stolen bases.
Krislyn Koler’s single up the middle scored Jaelynn Skok and Haley Kuk to trigger a three-run first inning. Koler scored on a pitch that got past the Newport catcher.
Skok, Jamie Eide, Kennedy Robison, Morgan Hopkins, and Tylee Frizzell each singled in the second inning to bring in six more Cougar runs. Chewelah led 9-0 after two at-bats.
Sweat’s triple in the third inning sent Skok and Kuk home. Brooklyn Rainer then singled, scoring Sweat as the Cougar lead widened to 12-0.
Singles off the bats of Shayla Hartill, Bailey Smith, Skok, Kuk, and Frizzell brought in six more Chewelah runs in the fifth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Skok threw all five innings, allowing only four scattered Newport hits. She struck out six Grizzly batters and did not yield a walk. The Cougar defense supported Skok’s performance by not allowing a Newport batter to go beyond second base. There were no Chewelah errors.
Kuk, Frizzell, and Skok led the Cougars at the plate with two hits apiece. Sweat’s three-bagger was the lone extra-base hit.
Jaelynn Skok batted 3-for-4 and scored three runs to support her pitching performance as Chewelah defeated Freeman 7-4 in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader. She allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four Freeman batters to notch the victory.
“After looking at the box scores of previous Freeman games, I knew they could hit the ball,” said Coach Tom Skok.
Koler went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in.
Skok scored Chewelah’s first three runs. She singled and was batted in by Koler in the first inning. In her next two times at bat, she was brought home by Haley Kuk.
Hits by Skok, Kuk, Koler, Hopkins, and Bailey Smith produced four Cougar runs in the fifth inning.
Larissa Sweat singled and was batted in by Skok in the sixth inning for the 7-4 win.
In the second game, Koler was 3-for-4 at the plate with two more runs batted in as Chewelah defeated Freeman 6-3 to sweep the doubleheader.
Emily Adams went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, and she batted in a run. Kennedy Robison also had two hits and batted in a run for the Cougars
Going into this week, the Lady Cougars have four more league games on their schedule. They play at Colville on Thursday and again at home on Tuesday. The girls finish with a doubleheader at Riverside.
