Four first round pins powered the Chewelah Cougars to a league win over Lakeside last Thursday night as they came from behind to defeat the Eagles 51-29 in Pein-Lynch Gym.
The Cougars trailed 23-6 after losing four of the first five bouts. Kyle Connall’s second round pin in the 126-pound match being Chewelah’s lone win.
The next five bouts, however, were won by the Cougars. Dustin Crowell initiated the Cougar come-back with a first round pin in the 138-pound match. After taking a 2-0 lead with the opening takedown, he pinned his Lakeside opponent in 1:15.
Quenton Smith then cradled-up his Eagle opponent twice in the third round of the 145-pound match to win a 10-4 decision. He had a 5-2 lead going into the third round, and then scored near-fall points twice with a cradle.
Older brother Russell Smith followed with a first round pin in 39 seconds to win the 152-pound pairing to close the gap to a 23-21 Lakeside lead. After scoring the opening takedown, he went right to a half-nelson for the quick pin.
Riley Olson’s forfeit win in the 160-pound bout gave Chewelah its first lead of the meet, 27-23, and the Cougars won four of the next five bouts to secure the league victory.
Adam Collins scored an early takedown and cradled his opponent onto his back in 59 seconds for a Cougar win in the 170-pound bout.
Dustin Olson finalized the Cougar win with a 16-second pin in the 285-pound heavyweight bout. Olson scored a double-leg takedown and took his opponent straight to his back for the pin.
Hunter Daniels and Will Londagen were both given forfeit wins by Lakeside, which was shorthanded because of illness.
“Going into this meet, I thought this was going to be a 12-point win or less by one team or the other,” said Coach Patrick Mitchell. “As it turned out, we ended up winning by 22 points. Lakeside had a couple of kids who were sick and didn’t wrestle against us, but they are in weights where we are strong, so it probably would not have made a difference in the outcome.”
With this win, Chewelah is now 2-0 in league competition. The Cougars hosted a meet this past Tuesday against Mead’s junior varsity, which has become an annual event. On Saturday, they travel to Tonasket for a tournament. Then, this coming Thursday, they travel to a league encounter at Freeman.
The Cougar lineup was bolstered this week by the return of veterans Conner Fulbright and Josh Hanley.
