Five Chewelah Cougar baseball players head the lineup of Jenkins High School athletes voted to All-Northeast A League teams this spring.
Pitchers Cody Sweat and Caleb Wiebe, infielders Dillon Bigler and Brandon Smith, and outfielder Calvin Connall were named to this season’s all-league team.
Sweat and Wiebe were the anchors of the Chewelah pitching staff this spring. Bigler was a middle infielder for the Cougars, getting in time at both shortstop and second base. Connall had a lot of speed and range in center field.
Both Chewelah doubles teams earned all-league status. The girls doubles team of Bethany Kofmehl and Becka Kenney, along with the boys doubles team of David Vilchiz and Tyler Monasmith were both honored by the league.
Morgan Farrington, Clint Long, and Josh Olson represented the Cougars on the all-league golf team. All three competed in this year’s state golf tournament.
Makayla Earl and Zack Schneider were named to the all-league track team. The two combined to bring home three state medals. Earl medaled in the shot put, the discus, and the javelin. Schneider rewrote the school hurdling records and was this year’s state champion in the 110-meter hurdles.
LaVonne Smith was the lone member of the Lady Cougar softball team to be chosen to this year’s all-league team. The Chewelah slugger has been a three-year starter behind the plate for the Cougars.
