Adam Collins and Kaitlin Krouse will be representing Jenkins High School this Friday and Saturday at the Washington State 1A Track and Field Championships on the campus of Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
Collins will compete in the long jump, the triple jump, and the high jump. Krouse will be competing in the discus and the shot put.
Collins was the bi-district champion in both the long jump and the triple jump. He launched a career-best leap of 20 feet, 7 inches to win the long jump at Riverside last Saturday. His winning triple jump measured 42 feet, 11 inches. He then placed second in the high jump at an even six feet.
Collins goes into the state tournament as the top-ranked triple jumper in the 1A classification. He is ranked third in the high jump and fourth in the long jump.
Krouse won the discus and placed third in the shot put. Her winning discus throw was measured at 122 feet, 6 inches. In the shot put, she threw 34 feet, 9 inches.
In winning the discus, Krouse set a personal-best record. She exceeded her previous personal record of 119’3″ by over three feet.
Going into this week’s state meet, Krouse is ranked second in the state in the discus. The sophomore thrower is ranked eighth overall in the shot put.
Two other Cougar athletes came very close to qualifying for the state meet. McKenzie Miller placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and Jayden Rainer finished fourth in the discus.
Miller ran the hurdles in a career-best 42.33 seconds. He also placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Rainer threw 102’11” in the discus. It was her best throw of the season as a freshman.
Unfortunately, only the top three competitors in every event will continue on to the state finale.
Also competing in the bi-district meet were Daniele Bradley, Kody Karsh, Sevannah Blain, Venessa Calhoon, Chris Lambert, Liz Taft, Summer Hodgden, and Moriah Hudson.
The Cougar boys placed seventh in the team scoring at Riverside. The Chewelah girls finished eighth.
