The City of Chewelah Planning Commission has had its difficulties in the last few years. Overturn on the Commission has been substantial for a variety of reasons. That has left the current City’s Planning Commission with only four members. The minimum required number of commissioners is seven. However, a meeting can be held as long as quorum is met. Quorum is four members. Obviously, it is very difficult to conduct business, when the commissioners are constantly striving to meet quorum. The City needs Planning Commissioners. The Mayor would like to invite anyone interested in serving on the Planning Commission to submit a letter of interest to him. The commission regularly meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 P.M. Meetings last for approximately one hour. However, if there is more business and the commissioners are willing, there may be an occasional extra meeting or a longer meeting held. Currently the Planning Commission is working on the City of Chewelah’s Comprehensive Plan. This plan was last updated in 2008. Its timing coincided with the beginning of the recession. In addition, since the last updated version was approved, the 2010 Census has been completed. Also, the Washington State Department of Commerce is requiring several specific updates to the plan, so the timing is perfect to bring the cities plan up to date with current data and realistic plans for the next 20 years. The Planning Commission will be holding several Workshops in the near future. These workshops are open to the public and are a great opportunity to experience what being on the Planning Commission requires. On Thursday, August 30, 2010 at 6:00 P.M., the commission will be gathering to discuss the Land Use Element of the Comprehensive Plan. On Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 6:00 P.M., another workshop will be held to discuss the Transportation Element of the Comprehensive Plan. Again, the public is invited and encouraged to attend. If you are interested but would like more information, please feel free to contact Tracy Ferrell at 935-8311 or email@example.com. No prior experience is required. All training is provided. It is required that you live within City Limits and have been a resident for three or more years. The only other thing needed is an interest in the future of the City and the ability to read and make determinations based on the facts that are provided. Volunteering to serve on the Planning Commission is a simple way to give back to your community and gives you the opportunity to help with planning for the future of Chewelah.
