After a couple of league losses during the week, the Chewelah volleyball team used part of its weekend to get back in the winner’s column with a three-game sweep at St. George’s.
As expected, the Lady Cougars struggled at Freeman on Tuesday against the taller Scotties. They lost the match to the perennially powerful Scotties in three straight games: 25-8, 25-16, and 25-14.
Ryann Richmond led the Cougar offense with four kills, and Brittney Wuesthoff set 11 assists. Megan Rowe, Megan Robertson, and Wuesthoff each had an ace serve.
Katelyn Garner led the Chewelah defense with seven digs. Kaitlin Krouse had the only Cougar block.
On Thursday against Newport, the Lady Cougars put up a good fight and came close in two games. However, in the end, they were beaten by the Grizzlies in three consecutive games.
The score of the first game was 25-22. The score of the third game was even closer at 25-23. But, the Lady Cougars just were not able to pull off the win in either game.
Savanah McMillin’s eight kills topped the Cougars at the net, and Wuesthoff set 21 assists to Chewelah hitters. Wuesthoff also contributed eight digs to the defensive effort. Krouse had the only Cougar block at the net.
The twin losses dropped the Lady Cougars to a 2-3 record in league play. They now stand in the middle of the pack in the current conference standings with just one more match to play in the first round of competition.
On Saturday, the Cougars traveled to the campus of St. George’s Academy, where they defeated the host Dragons in three games: 25-16, 25-15, and 25-14.
It was Richmond who spearheaded the Chewelah offense with eight hits for kills and three ace serves. Wuesthoff set 19 assists for Cougar kills.
McMillin rallied the Chewelah defense with double-digit digs. She and Krouse also worked hard at the net, and both finished the match with two blocks.
This past Tuesday, the Lady Cougars completed their first round of league play at Riverside, where they hope to notch their third win. On Thursday, they travel to Lakeside to start the second go-round of league action.
This coming week, the Lady Cougars go on the road for the third straight time when they drive to Wellpinit. Then, on Thursday, they return to their home court to face Kettle Falls.
