The Chewelah School Board decided during a special meeting Monday to adopt a resolution to cut two full-time teaching positions in the school district to deal with the projected budget shortfall.
For the 2019-20 school year, the district will eliminate a secretary, printshop operator and custodial position already laid off this year. They will also reduce the district’s CTE, drama and social study programs – which they are hoping to do so through attrition in the loss of two full-time teachers.
The school district must inform teachers of layoffs by May 15. The Chewelah Independent will have a more in-depth story next week concerning the budget of the Chewelah School District and reactions from community members about the resolution and the cuts that are happening.
