In hopes of obtaining a bid on the new track project that is closer to district estimates, the Chewelah School District re-opened the bidding process last Thurs., Sept. 22. The previous bidding process had only one company participate, Landscape Inc.,with a bid of $1.125 million. The district estimate for the work that would fully prepare the track site at Snyder Field for the new track surface was $733,000. Because the Landscape Inc. bid came it at over five percent of the estimate, state law required the district put the project out for re-bid.
The re-bid process will close on Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. and Chewelah Superintendant Rick Linehan said the district has revised the completion dates for the project in order to make it more flexible for interested companies.
“This year, we worked to have all of our home football games early to accommodate the start of the project and next year we will have the home games late in order to give the contractor more time to complete the track project,” Linehan said. A pre-bid meeting will be held for interested businesses on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at the district office. Architects and engineers will be at the pre-bid meeting to go over the project requirements and deadlines. The meeting is open to the public. The district hopes to receive a bid close it its project estimate, but Linehan said the district does have the flexibility to accept a slightly higher bid, as long as it is below the five percent increase threshold.
The start date for the project is set for Oct. 17, but Linehan said the district hopes to have the qualified contractor start as soon as possible to get ahead of the winter weather.
