A club team of Chewelah basketball players recently traveled down to the University of California-San Diego to play in a tournament comprised of 80 teams from the Western United States. Chewelah finished 3-3 over three days of competition. They flew out on June 23 and were able to also enjoy some beach time and tubing behind JHS alumni Dave Egger’s boat. The team was able to explore several different areas of the town, and even paraglide the Cliffs of Torrey Pines, check out the Torrey Pines Golf Course and enjoy the Belmont Park Amusement Park.
“I feel like we definitely could have played with more intensity and drive to win, but overall we played pretty well,” senior Bryce Harris said.
Four of the Chewelah players had never been on an airplane before and several had never been to a beach. The Chewelah club team also made this trip in 2008 with Dave Stroyan and Coach Verbeck. Several players from club team trips from the past 25 years donated so Chewelah kids could experience this.
“My favorite part about the trip was being able to go down there with all of my friends that I’ve grown up with,” senior Ryder Robison said.
A big thank you goes out to all those who participated in the fundraiser as well as all the local businesses and JHS alumni that donated to make this trip possible.
