Local optometrist, Dr. William Gimness, at 306 N Park, recently received the honor of becoming a Diplomate in Optometry by the American Board of Optometry. Doctors receive this award by demonstrating their knowledge, skills, abilities and a commitment to lifelong learning for the benefit of their patients.
Diplomate status is achieved through a number of qualifications including years of clinical experience, hours of continuing education and an extensive examination.
Physicians demonstrate, through formalized examination, that they have the fundamental, practice-related and practice environment-related knowledge to provide quality care in their specialty.
To maintain Board Certification physicians participate in educational and self-assessment programs that meet specialty-specific standards that are set by their member board.
This knowldge includes diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract, dry eye, and macular degeneration among others.
Lens design and treatment is also tested including the knowledge of how best to solve patient’s visual distbrubances including glare, blur, inablitiy to focus with aging, and headache.
Out of the approximately 34,800 optometrists in the US, there are currently only 931 Diplomates of the ABO.
Dr. Gimness’s office hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9-5 p.m.
