Cup measures athletics, academics and sportsmanship…
Chewelah athletes placed in the top 20 for the 2B classification in the WIAA Scholastic Cup in the 2018-2019 school year for their work in the classroom and on the field. The Cougars spent their first year in the state’s second smallest classification and did well both on and off the field.
Along with winning some league championships and heading to some state tournaments, Chewelah athletes placed 17th in the Scholastic Cup.
According to the WIAA website, the Scholastic Cup recognizes performance in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. Schools that finish at the top of their respective classifications in state athletic competition receive points, as do schools that finish at the top in team academic performance.
The Chewelah girls golf team was recently recognized as academic state champions.
Sportsmanship is also a factor in the Scholastic Cup rankings, with substantial points deducted for ejections from contests. At the end of the year, the school with the most points in their classification will be awarded the prestigious Scholastic Cup.
Chewelah scored 400 points to place 17th. Kettle Falls was No. 6 with 665 points and fellow NE 2B North member Northwest Christian was first with 1,095 points.
There are 62 schools in the classification.
In the 1A ranks, Lakeside earned a No. 7 spot in the Scholastic Cup with 775 points, whereas Colville was ranked No. 22 with 350 points.
