Bodie Katzer’s bunt single with two outs in the bottom of the final inning sent Wyatt Accord from third base with the winning run as Chewelah defeated Colville 13-12 in their first minor league game of the summer.
Chewelah went into its last at-bat trailing by two runs, 12-10. Landin Church triggered the come from behind rally with a double down the right-field line. Nolan Jeanneret then walked, putting the tying runs aboard. Accord then tripled to knot the score at a dozen runs apiece.
The squeeze bunt by Katzer with two outs was a gutsy call by Chewelah coach Eric Krausz, but it achieved its intended result, catching Colville off guard. Katzer beat the throw to first base while Accord was scoring the winning run.
The game was a see-saw battle, with both teams leading on the scoreboard. Colville was behind 10-9 going into the sixth inning and scored three runs to retake the lead.
Four consecutive walks by Colville pitchers gave Chewelah its first run in the opening inning.
Dakota Acosta was issued the fourth free trip to first base, bringing home Jeanneret in the process.
Singles off the bats of Miles Krausz and Conner Barkaloo sent two more Chewelah baserunners home in the second inning. Three additional runs scored in the third inning off five walks and a single from Luke McGuire.
Six hits produced three more Chewelah runs in the fourth inning. Luke Stahl, Miles Krausz, Jeanneret, Katzer, and Church singled. Barkaloo hit a double.
Shade Krausz and McGuire hit one-baggers in the fifth at-bat, producing another run.
Going into the sixth inning, Chewelah held a slim 10-9 lead.
Colville’s three runs in the top of the inning made it a two-run deficit.
Bryson Saboski, Katzer, and Accord shared the pitching duties for Chewelah.
Colville got quick revenge, defeating Chewelah 12-2 in the second game of Wednesday night’s doubleheader. It was the first outing for both teams as they got in some game experience prior to this weekend’s tournament.
Also selected for the Chewelah all-star team was Enrique Navarez.
The Chewelah 10U team will face Colville on Thursday, July 7, on the Bowling Alley field at 7 p.m. for their opening game of the 2016 Mike Carpenter Memorial Tournament during Chataqua. On Friday, they play Okanogan at 2:30 p.m. They play Tri County on Saturday at 4:45 p.m.
Chewelah will enter two 12U teams in the tournament.
