Over the past couple decades the City of Chewelah has subsidized the Chewelah Golf and Country Club (CG&CC), according to my calculations, in an amount well over one million dollars. This can all be documented in the public records if you care to dig deep enough.
The subsidies come in the form of water, power, roads, and fees for city services which were never charged.
The latest subsidy came through the city’s purchase of land from CG&CC for a new fire station then building it for them. The city had to pay for the septic system when the city has their own sewer system.
And then the City of Chewelah informed the public that they could no longer afford to keep the Chewelah pool open. The children of our community have lost a very valuable asset.
As a senior citizen, I can always remember a Chewelah swimming pool. Kettle Falls, Colville, Deer Park, all have public swimming pools. But now Chewelah cannot afford one because we are subsidizing a private golf course – all to the detriment of the children in our community. Shame on you . . .
