The Chewelah Chamber of Commerce is looking to promote patriotism throughout the city by sponsoring a storefront decorating contest for local merchants.
All businesses, whether Chamber members or not, are encouraged to decorate their building’s exterior in a patriotic theme by June 15 and keep them decorated through Chataqua, which concludes July 15.
Prizes will be awarded for the top participants although the Chamber has yet to determine what to reward the winners. A committee will judge the participating businesses on June 29.
The Chewelah Arts Guild is also offering patriotic window painting to merchants in exchange for donations. Contact Kay Lupton at 509-936-2010 to schedule window painting.
Chamber President Tracy Ferrell said they planned this decorating contest as a way to inspire the community and bring emphasis to merchants during the summer, which is a time where many activities are focused in the city park.
Even if people just drive by to look, it will show visitors what a “wonderful city we have,” Ferrell said.
The decorating contest is running in conjunction with other patriotic dates and events including Flag Day on June 14, Independence Day on July 4, and a local performance by the Air National Guard Band of the Northwest on July 1.
The Chewelah Arts Guild is hosting the Band of the Northwest’s free concert from 6-7:30 p.m. in the city park. They will include patriotic-themed activities prior to the event and serve locally-produced food throughout the evening.
This will be the first time the band has been in Chewelah since 2007. It will also be the band’s last tour through the area before it is deactivated due to budget constraints.
Contact the Chamber office at 509-935-8595 for any questions regarding the decorating contest, or to find other visitor and business information.
