It’s the time of the week where I talk about what terrible picks I made. Last week Chris Cowbough and I only missed two picks to take home the Grid Picks trophy which is like a chicken sandwich from Zips. Anybody that knows me understands that my good luck will not continue…
CHEWELAH 22, RIVERSIDE 10
What? You want me to pick against the Cougars after they had a running clock in the first quarter? I understand the team they were playing was undermanned, but wow.
Fun story, before the start of the Chewelah game last week, Jim Mach who helps out with the color guard looked at me during warmups and said “I think Bridgeport has three subs” and I laughed it off, walked across the field and halfway to the Cougar bench I walked past a Bridgeport player being attended to by medical staff. So two subs? But yes, Bridgeport was undermanned and still had an injury before they began the game.
Riverside will be tougher by nature of having a full roster but they only won one game this year. The Cougars will want to show progress and avenge a loss down in Chattaroy last year.
FREEMAN 30, BONNERS FERRY 0
Freeman – a consistent football power in the state. Bonners Ferry – town exists because there was once a ferry crossing? Sorry I’m going to go with the Scotties.
COLVILLE 28, WEST VALLEY 0
Colville is now up to No. 4 in the AP football poll. They’ll be playing a Spokane-area team and while everyone else has picked West Valley to win but I’m just saying – I don’t see the Eagles in the AP football poll. And remember what happened the last time a NEA League team played a Spokane team? Yeah it was last week and Deer Park crushed Rogers.
SHADLE PARK 28, LAKESIDE 27
You know all that talk about a NEA League team playing a Spokane team? I think that goes out the window when it’s Shadle Park. I know, I know, the Hilanders won just three games last year. But they also sent their QB to play football at Boise State. Lakeside sends their players to Dairy Queen in North Spokane for post-practice snacks.
ST MARIES 45, DEER PARK 29
You beat Rogers, Deer Park? I know they’re 3A and you’re 1A but I’m still not sold. You need to prove yourself! (This is setting up as a season where Deer Park goes undefeated and I pick against them every week)
OKANOGAN21, NEWPORT 7
Strong take by Newport scheduling Okanogan which was won the previous two state 2B titles. You could say 1a is a whole ‘nother classification, but it really isn’t. Okanogan had no business being in 2B for two years and gobbled up like 20 state championships. The Grizzlies, I dunno, have cool black matte helmets?
NWC 31, SPRINGDALE 30
Private schools recruit! *dragged away kicking and screaming*
WELLPINIT 22, SJE 21
I find it unfair Wellpinit has to play two towns (St. John and Endicott) but having seen those towns – welp I see why they had to combine. But seriously, Washington has to lead the Northwest in towns located in the middle of wheat fields that exist for no reason.
HUNTERS 30, ACH
Hunters, excuse me Columbia High School, had their first football game against Wellpinit cancelled because of that raging forest fire bearing down on the city limits of Wellpinit. Now their first game is against the 1B defending state champions, ACH. But consider that ACH had to combine three different towns – to play in the 1B ranks, where there’s literally a school in the classification with three kids.
NORTH DAKOTA STATE 45, EWU 44
I picked EWU last week against WSU. WSU has not won the previous five national championships in the FCS. NDSU has. Eastern’s defense also didn’t look any better than last season, so expect another shootout and Eagle fans scrambling for their heart medication.
WSU 40, BOISE ST. 30
The Cougars have dropped something like their last four or five season openers under Leach. Maybe he’s a slow starter? Maybe he needs coffee? I dunno. Anyways, Cougs come into this game focused because starting 0-2 would be a serious hit to their Rose Bowl aspirations.
WASHINGTON 101, IDAHO 0
Washington scheduled IDAHO?!
Idaho barely beat Montana State last week. Montana State is a FCS school that isn’t Eastern Washington University. Washington is the No. 8 team in the nation.
This is going to be the bloodbath of the week.
