What do you get when you have a nation based solely on the experiment of self-government in vast expanse of terrain that spans from sea to shining sea? You get America, that is what you get.
The Fourth of July is meant to celebrate our nation’s birthday thanks to some fellows in wigs. It’s still alive and kicking 241 years later! In honor of that, here are some interesting tid-bits about ‘Merica.
AMERICA ACTUALLY HAS THE TALLEST MOUNTAIN ON EARTH
It’s Mauna Kea in Hawaii, but the problem is only 13,796 feet of it is actually above water. When measured from seafloor to its peak, the mountain is over 32,000 feet which is higher than Mount Everest’s 29,028 feet. So America wins again.
AMERICA CONSUMES 100 ACRES OF PIZZA EACH DAY
So get to work Westside Pizza! I have a plot of land by my parents house that I’d like to turn into a sea of Canadian Bacon.
CHICAGO IS THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE FERRIS WHEEL
If it weren’t for America, we’d all just be throwing up on the Gravaton or realizing we’re too old to go do the zipline ride at Chataqua.
GEORGIA IS THE BIRTHPLACE OF MINIATURE GOLF
You’re welcome world. Show me a person that doesn’t like mini golf. There’s a reason that roughly 99 percent of first dates are trips to the mini-golf place.
THE PENTAGON IS THE LARGEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD BY AREA
The Pentagon has 17 miles of corridors and was built in 1943 at a cost of $83 million. Something tells me despite all this, people still complain about how small their cubicle is.
AMERICA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY TO LAND MEN ON THE MOON
Weirdly enough despite that capability, we have yet to send unpopular politicians or media people there and leave them.
BATTLE CREEK MICHIGAN PRODUCES ALL THE CEREAL
More cereal is produced in that town than in any other city worldwide. Thankfully Wisconsin is nearby for all the milk that is needed.
MONTANA HAS THREE TIMES AS MANY COWS AS IT DOES PEOPLE
Having been to Montana and then to places with more people, I can tell you – this is a pro rather than a con.
THE LIBERTY BELL HASN’T RANG IN OVER 170 YEARS
The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia was last rung for George Washington’s birthday in 1846. Since then an iPhone alarm has done the trick.
ABOUT 35 MILLION AMERICANS SHARE THE SAME DNA AS ONE OF 102 PILGRIMS WHO ARRIVED ON THE MAYFLOWER
Obviously the 1600s had a gene pool as varied and wide-reaching as Stevens County. (I’m kidding! But seriously, we have to admit we’re all related to a lot of people around here)
SEVEN PERCENT OF AMERICANS CLAIM THEY NEVER BATHE
And apparently they sit by me in a confined public space from time to time.
EVERY SECOND, AMERICANS CONSUME 100 POUNDS OF CHOCOLATE
So, greatest country on Earth then?
CHRISTMAS WAS ILLEGAL IN THE US UNTIL 1836
Not a joke! Originally thought to be a pagan holiday, all Christmas activities were banned by the Puritans in England. The Puritans that came to America continued to institute the ban until someone realized Egg Nog is delicious.
THERE ARE MORE PUBLIC LIBRARIES THAN MCDONALD’S IN THE US
But can libraries serve extra large fries? I think not.
THE US TAX CODE IS 5,000 PAGES WHILE THE BIBLE AND “WAR AND PEACE” ONLY HAVE ABOUT 4,500 PAGES
And it’s still probably less complex than the TV remote these days.
But seriously, we have a wonderful country and we should all take some time to sit back, laugh at ourselves, enjoy the things this country provides, continue to improve it and try not to blow our hands off with fireworks.
