(STAFF REPORTS/Chewelah Independent)
Responders redirect traffic through town, jaws of life used…
A car accident at roughly 5 p.m. on Monday evening shut down Highway 395 in front of Akers United Drug and Safeway for several hours.
According to unofficial reports, the accident involved a small sedan and a semi-truck. The driver of the sedan was heading southbound and, distracted by a dog in the car, swerved into the wrong lane. The truck driver of the semi saw the lane activity and slowed to nearly a stop before the collision occurred.
The sedan ended up in the lawn in front of Akers. The jaws of life had to be used to extract one person from the passenger side of the vehicle.
Three people were in the car: two adults and one child. One was flown to Spokane with non-life-threatening injuries. The dog was also injured with a possible broken pelvis.
Fire District 4, Chewelah Fire, Chewelah Police, Stevens County Sheriff’s Ambulance and Chewelah Ambulance responded to the call. Washington State Patrol will do a commercial investigation because a commercial vehicle was involved.
Traffic was re-routed through town quickly after the accident thanks to speedy response from local officials.
The driver of the sedan had a suspended license and was on federal probation awaiting prison.
This is an unofficial report and a more official story will be released by The Independent.
