Abundant Life Fellowship would like to welcome Pastor John and Patty Southwick to Chewelah.
John was born in Slayton, Minnesota, a rural community in the southwest corner of the state. He graduated from Slayton High School and went on to attend the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, receiving a Bachelor of Physics degree. He continued to graduate school there, earning a Master of Business Administration. He then started working for Bell Telephone company. During this time frame he received a call to ministry and realized he would one day leave the corporate world and enter the Lord’s service full time.
A few years later John enrolled in the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO. While there he also worked for Bell Telephone in Denver. Shortly after completing his Master of Divinity Degree, he took a call to be pastor of the Little Log Church in Palmer Lake, CO. From there he became pastor of Palmer Divide Christian Fellowship, also in Colorado. While serving this church he married Patty.
After one year of marriage, he was appointed to serve Milton United Methodist Church in Milton, WA. After seven years there, the Southwicks moved to Poughkeepsie, NY. John assumed the position of Director of Research at the General Board of Global Ministries (the United Methodist mission agency). While there, John also completed his Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Seminary.
The Southwicks were able to move back to Washington after five years in NY, as John continued to work for Global Ministries, though now remotely. At this time he also served Green Bluff UMC, a small country church near the Southwick home north of Spokane. In 2013, John took a position with Good News, a renewal organization for United Methodists. In 2015, he retired from the United Methodist Church, but agreed to serve the Goldendale United Methodist Church for a year as interim pastor.
On July 1, 2016 he started as pastor of Abundant Life Fellowship, Chewelah, WA.
John and Patty have three grown kids and two grand-children. Patty is working as a school psychologist for the Spokane School District.
