Adam Collins will lead a contingent of six Chewelah wrestlers to this year’s Mat Classic XXV state wrestling tournament in the Tacoma Dome.
Collins swept the 170-pound weight division at the Bi-District Tournament in Chelan last weekend, winning all three of his matches. He is currently the second-ranked 170-pounder in the state going into this weekend’s finale.
“At Chelan, Adam defeated the third-ranked and the fifth-ranked wrestlers in the state in this weight bracket,” said Coach Patrick Mitchell. “Early in the season, he defeated the top-ranked kid.”
Collins easily handled fifth-ranked Bobby Anderson from Chelan, winning that bout by a 10-3 score. He then pinned third-ranked Cody Harvill from Omak in the championship finals.
In his first outing in the state tournament, Collins will face Noah Son from Cascade Christian.
Placing second in their respective weight brackets for the Cougars were Russell Smith and Dustin Olson. Both wrestlers won their first two matches, but they lost in the championship finals.
“Dustin weighed in at 223 pounds,” explained Coach Mitchell. “His opponent in the finals, Louis Garcia from Chelan weighed in at 283. He outweighed Dustin by 60 pounds, and he is the top-ranked heavyweight in the state.”
Smith won a pair of decisions to get into the finals at Chelan. In his opening match at state, he will battle Brandon Marquez from Mabton.
Olson pinned his first two opponents at the bi-district tournament. He will meet Miguel Morales from Forks in his first state tournament match.
Dustin Crowell, Josh Hanley, and Matthew Crise will also wrestle in this year’s state championships in the Tacoma Dome. All three won two of their bouts at Chelan last weekend and placed fourth in their respective weight brackets. Crowell and Hanley each had a pin and a decision. Crise pinned two opponents.
“Dustin was behind by two points with just a few seconds left in his first match,” explained Mitchell. “But, Dustin got an escape and a takedown to win it, 11-10.”
Action will take place on 26 mats in the Tacoma Dome where all four state classifications will vie for state titles, plus a girls’ bracket. Four mats will be reserved for the 1A classification in which Chewelah’s wrestlers will compete.
The Cougars will leave for the coast on Thursday morning. The first matches on Friday are scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
