Jenkins Middle School student Justin Peterson has been selected to receive a Safeco Community Hero Award, and Safeco Insurance will donate $5,000 to the Inland Northwest Honor Flight organization in his name.
The 15 national grant recipients have been recognized for their commitment to making a difference in their communities based on local nominations. Peterson was nominated by Tamara Bowman of Chewelah Insurance Agency, a Safeco Agent.
Peterson has a chance to win another $10,000 for Inland Northwest Honor Flight through an online voting contest open to all 15 Community Hero Award recipients.
The top two individuals receiving the most votes will each win an additional grant from Safeco for the nonprofits they support. The top vote-getter will receive $10,000; the runner-up will get $5,000.

Each year, Safeco Insurance supports and honors the civic engagement of Safeco agents, and recognizes and celebrates individuals and nonprofit organizations that make a difference in their communities through the Agent Giving Program.
Safeco agents are given the opportunity to nominate local heroes and the nonprofit organizations they support. To qualify, the nonprofit must focus on one or more of the following areas: education, health and safety, and civic engagement.
Since 2010, Peterson has continued to raise money for Inland Northwest Honor Flight, and with this additional $5,000, his total comes to nearly $33,000 raised. He has raised money through annual Nacho Feed benefits, ORV poker rides, and ongoing wristband sales among other activities.
Founded in 2009, INWHF gives veterans an opportunity to visit Washington D.C. to see their memorial. They also provide volunteers to act as guardians to ensure their safety and enjoyment. Top priority is given to survivors of WWII and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit a memorial.
