Wellpinit got off to a hot start and then held on to dispose of Northport 34-12 on Friday afternoon in a home game for the Redskins. Clayton Flett was the main ballcarrier for Wellpinit, toting the ball 15 times for 149 yards in the Northeast 1B matchup. The win improved the Redskins to 2-0 on the season after their opening game was cancelled because of a wildfire threat to the town.
Terrance Flett caught a four-yard pass from Shaylon Tonasket for Wellpinit’s first score, followed by a three-yard touchdown run by Clayton Flett. That put the Redskins up 14-0 after one quarter.
They added another score – a 33-yard run by Philip Garcia, to go up 20-0 at the half.
The Middleworths of Northport struck back in the third quarter. Kade Middleworth threw two touchdown passes – 38 and 45 yards – to Aiden Middlesworth to pull within 20-12. Wellpinit got the timely answer-back touchdown as Clayton Flett ripped off a 57-yard touchdown run towards the end of the third quarter.
Gavyn Wilbourne recovered a fumble in the endzone to round out Wellpinit’s scoring in the fourth quarter.
Philip Garcia also added 94 all-purpose yards for the Redskins. Wellpinit (2-0) plays at Inchelium next Thursday.
Bulldogs down Springdale
Despite a strong first half, Springdale surrendered 21 third quarter points in a 29-6 Northeast 2B league loss to Kettle Falls on Friday night.
Springdale had 187 yards of offense.
The Chargers and Bulldogs defense traded blows for most of the game. Kettle Falls led 8-0 at halftime thanks for a 67-yard touchdown run by running back McKay Knowlton.
Springdale pulled within 8-6 thanks to a 14-yard scoring run by Payden Cates in the third quarter but then the floodgates opened for Kettle Falls. A touchdown run of three yards by Knowlton, a six-yard run by Casey Hamilton and a 55-run breakaway by Knowlton sealed the deal for the Bulldogs first win of the season.
Knowlton finished the game with 242 yards on 16 carries. The Bulldogs finished with 335 yards of total offense and passed for 30 yards.
For Springdale, Cates finished with 101 yards on 17 carriers, Wyatt Edwards had 48 yards on 11 carries.
Springdale plays at Reardan this Friday at 7 p.m. Kettle Falls plays at Northwest Christian on the same day.
Columbia picks up first win
The boys of Hunters picked up their first victory of the season, downing Entiat 82-46 on the road in Northeast 1B action on Friday. Van Kiefer led the charge for the Lions, notching 185 yards on seven caries and four rushing touchdowns.
Kiefer also added a 60-yard interception returned for a touchdown and a 55-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Columbia quarterback Corbin Nelson was 7-for-12 passing for 90 yards while Riley McClain went 6-for-11 for 77 yards and a touchdown. Nelson also rushed the ball eight times for 38 yards while McClain notched 43 yards on six carries.
In all, the Lions finished with 547 yards in total rushing.
Daniel Wines carried the ball 11 times for 61 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Pierce notched 12 carries for 59 yards and a score.
Defensively, Elliot finished with 14 tackles, while Wines and Gleave each collected 10 tackles. Boyer also had 8 tackles.
Hunters (1-1) will host St. John-Endicott this Friday.
NOTE: Inchelium picked up their second victory of the season, downing Pateros 45-0 and handing their Northeast 1B foe their third loss of the year. The Hornets host Wellpinit on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
